Liina Kuittinen (Finlandia)
«In my practise each performance is independent but together they can be considered as variations of a theme.
Lately I’ve turned my attention to such phenomenons as melting, pouring or leaking. Not so much of the thing itself but what it can say, not as metaphor, but as true example of matter and how it behaves and reacts for surrounding conditions. Water is escaping through the smallest crack, and all the forces that are making it happen. To find out through experience what is the weight of water and what draws it towards the bottom while vaporising is drawing upwards and absorption is stopping the movement. Simple phenomenon consists of several directions and this simultaneity of events seems to be the nature of all vital configurations. At the same time it is about zooming, or focusing on details that reveal patterns that can be found from reality in different scales.
In my work language is present as a rhythm of thought and logic. During performance I am mute. Clarity of my actions needs no explanations and the other hand if gestures would be forced to overlap with layer of text they would loose their weight and details. Repetition with variations is stuttering action, simultanic creation and revealed process. When repeated, word or gesture starts to make a new shape and grow over its borders, to leak from its conventional frame. As in speech thought is not complete before it is spoken, gives action done live the final form for the seed of an idea.»
Tomasz Szrama (Polonia)
Born in Poland in 1970 and living in Finland, Szrama’s practice shifts between multiple disciplines, including photography and video. Regardless of the medium, a dominate common thread in all of his work is the use of his own body and methods of performance art, such as action, gesture, and the physical manipulation of everyday materials. Szrama’s work is humorous and self-reflexive, often putting his own body into impossible and even ridiculous situations such as attempting to hang himself with helium balloons, covering his entire body in plaster cast making himself immobile and then waiting for hours in a busy tourist street, or boarding a plane with his own parachute. His work touches on themes of travel, trust, and the ever present potential for personal failure.
Maurice Blok (Países Bajos)
Whilst concentrating on sculpting, during my studies, I realized that what occurred before the work was even presented was of as much importance to me as the final piece itself. Subsequently, I started carrying out short experiments in front of a video camera; something that soon became close to what is called performance art. Soon after my work evolved into actual performances, involving setting up and carrying out «actions» that bear aesthetic results in front of physical audiences.
Having worked physically, and using tools, on an object (as a sculptor) it was only natural to bring this to my action pieces too. Although my work is performative I still consider myself remaining with a sculptural attitude . Constructing and deconstructing whilst having some kind of interaction with audience (or not). Naturally, one’s performance art is ordered in a chronological manner, yet the viewer is not aware of this while encountering a performance.
Magnús Logi Kristinsson (Islandia)
Born in 1975 in Iceland, Kristinsson has been creating solo performances since 1999 when he moved to Amsterdam to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, focusing on performative practice and receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003. From 2005 to 2007 he was performing with the interdisciplinary performance group Oblivia. He received his Masters of Fine Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, where he now lives and works.
Language and the body become structural and sculptural forms in Kristinsson’s performance-based practice. Through a systematic manner of speaking his diverse listings become a mix of concrete poetry and music, while his physical presence is put to the test as it borders on the inanimate.
